Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry is used to calm and reduce any anxiety associated with dental treatment.  Dr.’s Caffaratti and Cirelli offer onsite three sedation options, should you need them. These include Nitrous Oxide, Oral Sedation, and Conscious IV Sedation.  Dr.’s Caffaratti and Cirelli and all team members who work with you are CPR certified and use as necessary; pulse oximeters, blood pressure monitors, and heart rate monitors to ensure you are in excellent care throughout your dental appointment.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide with oxygen is a safe, effective sedative agent used to calm a patient’s fear of the dental visit and enhance effective communication. Additionally, it works well with patients whose gag reflex may impede with dental treatment.

Oral Sedation

Anti-anxiety medications are used to calm a patient’s fear of dental treatment. These prescription medications are given to the patient and are taken before a dental visit.

Conscious IV Sedation

Conscious IV sedation has occasionally been dubbed “sleep dentistry,” however this term is misleading. In actual fact, you do not sleep during the procedure, but because of the effects produced by the sedative medications, you may feel sleepy.

IV sedation enables you to be kept awake throughout the entire procedure, but you will feel relaxed and likely won’t remember much about your treatment. The use of general anesthesia is not considered sedation dentistry.

One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes, when in fact it may have taken hours to perform. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as wisdom teeth extractions, implant procedures, or extensive restoration procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer appointments.
